Nearly 80% of the human body is made up of water. Every cell, organ and tissue in the body needs water to function and the benefits of drinking water are not limited to cellular processes. Pure, clean water is necessary for the body to remove harmful toxins and contaminants through detoxification processes and water is necessary for cells to nourish themselves through metabolism. Joan Koelemay, RD, dietitian for the Beverage Institute sums up the body’s needs as, “Think of water as a nutrient your body needs that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lost each day.”
The amount of water needed on a daily basis varies between individuals, heavy activity such as sports and ingestion of other substances, such as alcohol and salt can put an increased demand on the body for water. Kaiser Permanente nephrologist Steven Guest, MD points out that regardless of levels of activity, “Fluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool and these losses must be replaced daily for good health.” Much of the American diet is high in salt and phosphorus putting an even greater priority on water consumption to battle dehydration and remove these harmful substances from organ systems.
Clear skin: Drinking water frequently provides clear, toned skin. As we age, skin loses its elasticity, which leads to wrinkles, dryness and age spots. Water improves the tone of skin and flushes out toxins which improves texture and color.
Weight loss: Drinking water to lose weight is recommended nearly universally by prestigious doctors and institutions. Water assists the body in removing fat that is burned through exercise. Water is also a natural hunger suppressant, and is especially helpful on hot, humid days where the body can confuse thirst with hunger. Water easily replaces high calorie drinks such as soda, and adding fruit or small amounts of juice can provide a flavorful alternative to sugary sports drinks.
Boosts metabolism and helps detox and cleanse: Water aids metabolism and helps the body naturally detoxify. The body utilizes the kidney and liver to remove harmful substances, such as heavy metals, harmful food additives, and inert chemicals not used in metabolism. In order for the kidneys and liver to function properly, an adequate supply of water must be available to the body to flush toxins and waste from the bloodstream and out of the body. Energy is created in the cells of the body using water as a catalyst. Dehydration stalls this process and leads to fatigue, cramping and exhaustion, as well as weight gain as the body struggles to burn fat and sugars.
Natural remedy for headaches: Water is a natural cure for migraines and headaches. Headaches are an inflammatory response which is often brought on in the early stages of dehydration. A cool glass of water is often a more effective pain reliever than over the counter remedies.
Immune system support: Proper hydration is necessary for the body to form an effective immune response. Individuals who are frequently dehydrated experience more illness and can put themselves at risk for heart and kidney disease.
Relieve fatigue and increase energy: Lastly, water is important in the lubrication of our joints and to support healthy muscles. Without proper hydration joints become stiff and painful and the body experiences a loss of energy. Water is a known revitalizer and electrolyte imbalance is one of the most common causes of exhaustion on the sports field. Water is more than a building block for life, it is the elixir that keeps life moving smoothly.
